On Saturday 21st and Sunday 22nd of August, echomaterico had the opportunity of attending a Workshop at NYC-Resistor. The issue was assembling a board designed by Re:farm the city. The experience was incredible, especially because this board, that connects through Arduino, can open new development to all our previous investigation in terms of sustainable integration of landscape procedures and architectural design.

FIGMENT / The City of Dreams Pavilion / Geometry Generation

This post describes the generation of the main geometry for the FIGMENT pavilion. Our concept was to create a structure that could behave in two different ways. At the bottom level very Rigid (through wooden ribs); the upper level was quite flexible. In fact this one was conceived as a chamber to accumulate water vapor and consequently it could BREATH. The structure was made by PP-R pipes anchored to horizontal wooden ribs.

The parametric generation was built with GRASSHOPPER and the two main parameters were the deflection from the SUN axes (south/north) and the rotation on the vertical zenith.

In questa sezione raccontiamo le prime fasi della realizzazione dei laboratori. In particolare il muro di delimitazione della proprietá e di contenimento del riempimento, pensato come un sistema a reazione con la piana. Successivi problemi di natura burocratica/amministrativa hanno causato la demolizione di una parte, salvata e successivamente recuperata per il locale termico.

La bassa portanza del suolo ha poi comportato speciali fondazioni, plinti su pali, opportunamente ricollegati per reagire alle sollecitazioni sismiche.

Il montaggio della struttura, cosí come l’impermeabilizzazione della copertura e la realizzazione delle tamponature interne non ha comportato particolari problemi.

La posa in opera della pannellatura leggera, invece, é stata la prima esperienza nella quale si é dovuti misurare la precisione di elementi industrializzati con le esigenze di costruzione in opera, soggetta come sempre a tolleranze. Ciononostante il risultato é stato estremamente soddisfacente, riconoscendo all’impresa il merito di aver mantenuto tutte le disposizioni di progetto.

Durante la realizzazione dei laboratori uno dei due clienti, Oleficio Matalucci Ortenzia, per la cronaca mia zia (berardo é colui che scrive…), maturó la necessitá di avere uno spazio porticato molto piú grande di quanto inizialmente progettato. Questo perché le recenti esperienze di molitura, nella vecchia sede, avevano messo a dura prova i regimi produttivi a causa del persistente maltempo.

Dopo un’intensa revisione del progetto (ahimé l’architettura…quanta fatica) si decise di apportare una variante al progetto. In particolare un grande spazio porticato venne concepito come un nuovo volume aperto, grazie anche al supporto e consulenza di Fabiano, capace di confrontarsi con l’ampia piana del Vomano.

Le grandi luci e l’esperienza del pesante cemento armato, ci spinsero a realizzare una struttura leggera in Legno lamellare, coperta in policarbonato alveolare di due finiture, trasparente ed opalino.

Ancora una volta l’impresa si é dimostrata capace, competente e desiderosa di realizzare nel segno della qualitá, badando particolarmente alla precisione dei dettagli.

Il risultato finale convince noi tutti.

Daylight and Shadows physical testing in the Skydome

The Vertical Studio Workshop at the University of Cardiff, has been an interesting experience for students and tutors for modelling and testing Daylight performances and Shadows into two building in scale 1:50.

Second and First year architecture studens participated to the workshop held by Echomaterico.net(enrico@echomaterico.net) and Shan Shan Hou (researcher and PhD student at the School of Architecture). The workshop has been focused on passive and sustainable design.

One of the two students' group setting up daylight sensors inside their model. Daylight is calculated using a uniform clear sky (U.K. standard 5000lux)

The aim of the workshop was to investigate practical and theoretical issues related with passive design in dwellings. Nowadays, more than in the past, architects are asked to face a challenging scenario in which their design must communicate a responsible action taken toward a delicate and compromised environment. Providing students with multidisciplinary tools (from architecture to engineering background) will stress the importance of technical and practical aspects of the passive design. Building itself has to be perceived as a complex system structured to interact with the environment through passive and active technologies.
Students have been driven across a 3weeks design and lectures workshop culminating with the modelling and testing of two physical prototype (scale 1:50).

Measuring daylight with photovoltaic sensors allowed students to understand the behaviour of their models and to test different configurations of their facades in order to achieve a optimal natural light level.

The 10m diameter sky-dome installed in the main floor of the School of Architecture provided an amazing working space and represented a fascinating learning tool for students.

The model is now ready. The dome is now cleaned by any obstacle, the door is than closed and measurement is taken.

The project starting point considers the symbiotic dynamics of the lichens, based on two vital processes of most of the ecosystems: photosynthesis and fermentation. The structural and geometrical configuration has been generated to allow daily blooming, provoked by the CO2 production, oxygen absorption and sunlight management. According to the symbiotic principle two material fields are proposed: the down one dedicated to the fermentation process and related to the decomposition of plants organic waste, and the upper one, dedicated to photosynthesis and plant growing. The test of the machine proliferation in a territorial scale is based on the definition of gradients that consider the different quantities of organic waste production, of CO2 production and O2 absorption between the urban areas and the agricultural fields.
